Started in 1998, the PrivacyMark® System will mark its 15th anniversary in April 2013. Over this period, the accumulated number of PrivacyMark entities has reached more than 16,000, and it has earned widespread trust and support as a third-party certification system for the protection of personal information in Japan.
A recent trend in Japan and overseas has been the holding of events for calling attention to the importance of privacy and protecting personal information on January 28 of each year, which is designated as "Data Privacy Day and Data Protection Day". In Japan, concerns about the protection of personal privacy have been on the rise, with the enactment of the Personal Information Protection Law in April 2005 and the submission of a national ID number proposal to the Diet in February 2012 which would require that a unique number be assigned to each citizen for social security reform.
In this type of environment, JIPDEC marked the occasion of Data Privacy Day and Data Protection Day by holding the "JIPDEC PrivacyMark Forum 2013" to promote greater awareness of the importance of personal information protection and provide PrivacyMark entities valuable information on addressing personal information protection.
This Forum presented the latest trends in personal information protection in Japan and abroad and also case studies in how PrivacyMark entities implement their personal information protection management system(PMS). An awards ceremony was also held where certificates of appreciation were presented for expressing our gratitude to PrivacyMark entities who have been PrivacyMark entities for over 14 years.
