JIPDEC PrivacyMark Forum 2016 in Tokyo/Osaka

This year marks the 19th year of the PrivacyMark System®. Since its establishment in 1998, the accumulated number of PrivacyMark® entities has reached over 19,800. This growing number shows the widespread trust and support that the initiative has acquired as a third-party certification system for the protection of personal information in Japan. In 2015, the government approved (September 3, 2015) and proclaimed (September 9, 2015) the proposed revision of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (Act of Partial Revision of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information and the Act on the Use of Numbers to Identify a Specific Individual in the Administrative Procedure); this marked the first time in ten years for it to be revised. In addition, the implementation of the Social Security and Tax Number System based on the Number System Act was launched; all citizens of Japan were notified of their individual numbers, which resulted in heightening of the awareness of protecting personal information and privacy. Development of rules and legislation for the protection of personal information and privacy is also progressing around the world including the EU, OECD, US and APEC.

In this context, and in support of the “Data Privacy Day”, which promotes the protection of personal information and privacy, JIPDEC held the “JIPDEC PrivacyMark Forum 2016” on January 28 and February 3. With both venues combined, the event enjoyed participation of 1,209 people and was a great success.

So many participants attended and stayed until the end of the forum, because the government enacted the revised Act on the Protection of Personal Information very recently, and the people showed great interest, involvement, and eagerness to acquire information on the Act on the Protection of Personal Information and the Number System Act, and this is one of the reasons why so many people attended and stayed until the very end eagerly listening to the addresses.
